What a bounty

Fall’s bounty

Mom called to wish me happy birthday and while on the phone asked if we needed tomatoes. Hubby was wanting to make salsa so I said sure. I had appointments all week and Thursday was the quickest I could be there.

After eating my cereal I called mom and she invited me over to take advantage of her labors. I had spoken to my sister prior to retiring, she offered us their tomatoes and various other veggies. When I mentioned to hubby he was interested but with everything going on unable to get over there. So I text my sister asking if she would be home. Her response was “come on over!”

First stop was Mom’s

She helped me pick the ripe ones from her vines, tossing the spotted ones and ones with holes. Mom had also dug up some potatoes for us. Nice big red potatoes! She also gave me green peppers. It didn’t seem long and we were on our way to my sister’s house, which is across the road. Both live on an old railroad bed and are a considerable distance off the road.

I remember one winter I was riding with my brother over to mom’s house. When we left he was cruising along in his old station wagon. When we approached the road we were traveling a bit to fast for icy conditions. There was an oncoming car and my brother asked me was it ok as we were unable to stop. I motioned for him to keep going and we shot across the road to my sisters driveway. The oncoming car passed and we backed out.

My sisters garden

When we arrived at my sister’s house, she came out with her new golf cart. It was all black  with a white top, electric. A real nice golf cart! She drove us to her garden, we all go out and picked of the fruit of her labors. My sister loaded me up with jalapeños, Roma and beefsteak tomatoes. I brought five baskets of produce home. Tomorrow my husband and I make salsa!

I am thankful for my mom and sister. Hubby and I wrote off canning salsa this year because we had no tomato source. The last time we made it, hubby stopped by a produce stand and bought a couple bushel. He wasn’t into it this year.

I had spoken to my hubby during his lunch break. I told him I was going to go over and pick the tomatoes. He told me where the baskets were to put them in and off I went. When he got home this afternoon I heard him outside when he came across the beautiful bounty. “Holy shit!” After that he was dancing to the theme music of Blue Bloods! I so love that man!
