“Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart
until, in our own despair, against our will,
comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.”         ― Aeschylus

I heard it on Blue Bloods one night and decided to look it up. It touches my heart every time I hear it (Blue Bloods was a re-run that night). Such a defining statement. If I were to break it down, in my opinion, “..comes wisdom through the awful grace of God” represents that God’s grace is beyond the comprehension of man or woman.

Whether we want to or not we gain something from our heartache, grief, despair. A way to heal from the hurt. No matter how long it takes, at times without our conscious attention, a corner is turned.

my grandmother

It was the worst pain I had ever known. The grief of losing my grandmother. It took me several years to get to the other side of it. Every day, every letter I wrote, every conversation was never without the pain. It clouded my judgement, it controlled my choices, it took over my actions.

My mother had just lost her best friend at the same time. I could not console her, I could only intensify her grieving. I was 20 years old. It was all about me.

for others

The seasons of our lives have meaning beyond our comprehension the same as grieving hurt. I believe in part it is to express love for each other. Help each other. Share our experiences with each other. Support each other.

9As like-minded people, we all make up one body. We all have our functions, knowing or unknowing. Realized or unrealized. Good or bad in the views of others. By “the awful grace of God”.

In today’s language

Aeschylus was credited with many different thoughts, comments extracted from plays and recorder musings. Some tricky to decipher and others not so much. In today’s environment and in every day living we would do well to remember these words:

“Tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world.”
